Pro-Fit Mail-In vs DIY Kit: Which Steering Wheel Retrim Route Suits You?

You've decided to retrim your steering wheel. The next question is whether to stitch it yourself with a DIY kit or mail it to our workshop for a Pro-Fit service. Both produce a hand-stitched, bespoke wheel — the right choice comes down to your skill, your time, and how perfect the finish needs to be.

DIY Kit: the hands-on route

Our DIY kits ship a pre-stitched, pre-punched cover in your chosen material and thread, plus needles and waxed thread. You remove the old cover, seat the new one, and baseball-stitch it closed yourself. It's the route for owners who want to say they did it.

  1. 1Cost — Lower — you supply the labour, so you only pay for the cover and materials.
  2. 2Turnaround — Your own pace. Most first-timers finish a wheel in an evening; experienced hands do it in under two hours.
  3. 3Skill needed — Moderate. The baseball stitch is learnable, but consistent tension takes practice.
  4. 4Finish — Excellent with care. A first attempt may show minor tension variance; a practiced hand produces a flawless seam.

Pro-Fit Mail-In: the workshop route

With Pro-Fit, you post your wheel to our Worksop workshop. We strip, retrim and hand-stitch it, then return it tracked within 48 hours. You get a factory-grade finish and your car's only off the road for a few days.

  1. 1Cost — Higher — you're paying for expert labour and a guaranteed finish.
  2. 2Turnaround — 48 hours in-workshop, plus transit both ways. We send a tracked returns label.
  3. 3Skill needed — None from you — just pack the wheel carefully.
  4. 4Finish — Concours-grade. Every stitch is uniform, the seam is buried, and the rim feels OEM.

Airbag note: many modern wheels have an airbag module. Removing and reinstalling it safely is part of the Pro-Fit service; for DIY, follow your car's service procedure and never power the car with the airbag disconnected.

Which should you choose?

If you enjoy working with your hands, want to learn, and can accept a learning curve, a DIY kit is deeply satisfying and great value. If your wheel is your daily, you want a flawless finish, or you'd rather not tackle an airbag, Pro-Fit is the answer. Many customers do one wheel DIY, then send the next to us — the comparison is its own education.

Either way, you end up with a bespoke, hand-stitched wheel in premium material. Start with a material sample pack, then pick your route.
